Teaching

Before returning to industry (April 2007) I did some lecturing for the School of Maths, Physics and Information Technology at James Cook University (JCU) in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. I’d be interested in doing some teaching in industry in the future.

Project Subjects

I ran the student project subjects (cp3046/cp5046/cp3047/cp5047) in which students spend a year doing an industry/community project. The subjects are run through the student wiki

(I set up and maintain the wiki, including accounts so please contact me if you have any login problems.)

Based on this work Phillip Musumeci and I won a Carrick citation for outstanding contributions to student learning in 2006.

There is more information about these subjects on JCU IT’s industry collaboration page.

Introduction to Computer Science II

I also lectured for cp1300: Introduction to Computer Science II, which is run from LearnJCU. It’s c++, which is not one of my favourite languages, but I kept myself interested by writing interesting assignments (“The Caverns of Mysteriousness”, “Baby, Baby Baby”).

Databases

In the past I’ve lectured for Advanced Database Management, and enjoyed studying Oracle DBMS 10g in Carrie Lui’s class. I think it’s really important to keep oneself up to date with technology if you are going to claim that you know something about technology.
