Before returning to industry (April 2007) I did some lecturing for the School of Maths, Physics and Information Technology at James Cook University (JCU) in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. I’d be interested in doing some teaching in industry in the future.

Carrick Citation

Based on our work on student project subjects - students spend a year doing an industry/community project - Dr Phillip Musumeci and I won a Carrick Citation for outstanding contributions to student learning in 2006:

“For creation of industry project subjects that cultivate practical skills for understanding problems and managing risks, supported by collaborative tools for peer review and reflection”

The Carrick citations are a government funded national award scheme managed by the Carrick Institute.

The platform for collaboration mentioned above is MoinMoin wiki, modified to only allow access by students. Each student maintains a wiki page to show the progress of their project. Students can easily share ideas and look at how past projects proceeded (or even improve the subject guidelines!).

I want to thank the IT lecturers in Cairns and Dr Chris Christensen in Townsville for helping us to run these subjects and giving us great ideas; Tony Gleeson for helping us with the application; and Dr PJ Radcliffe for providing us with the inspiration for these subjects.

Introduction to Computer Science II

I also lectured for cp1300: Introduction to Computer Science II. The language was c++. I made a strong effort to create interesting development assignments (“The Caverns of Mysteriousness”, “Baby, Baby Baby”).

Databases

I’ve lectured for Advanced Database Management, and enjoyed studying Oracle DBMS 10g in Dr Carrie Lui’s class.
